Interesting Article! I can relate to this as a Recruitment Consultant I meet new people every day. There have been many times when I have put forward a candidate who wasn't the typical criteria for my client and the opportunity has worked out amazingly for them! We always go the extra mile to meet our candidates to understand more about them and their career aspirations, as well as visiting our clients to understand their needs.
When managers ask “What advice do you have for me on making hiring decisions?” I tell them to hire the quirkiest candidate they meet. Candidates who have the exact experience and who have manicured and career paths are seldom the best hires, in my experience. We forget that policies and procedures don’t thrill customers or create markets for our products and services. We pretend that the best person to hire in any job is the person who has done the exact same job before. Who would be interested in doing the same job over and over at different companies? If you have candidates and you can’t decide who to hire, hire the quirkier person. Hire the person who has a story to tell about choices, interests and passion, not a story about moving up the corporate ladder.
