Delivering feedback is always tough especially in the world of recruitment. We fall back on the “sandwich” approach: where you sandwich negative feedback in positive feedback. I prefer an open and honest approach which is constructive to be able to learn from.
Is there only one version of sandwich feedback? 1.“Traditional” sandwich approach Lots of positive feedback sandwiching negative or critical feedback. By softening someone with a positive message, they will actually listen to your critical feedback before reacting defensively. 2. Lots of bread, little meat approach Lots of bun, little meat, where there’s a lot of positive, but little actual feedback involved. 3. Open-faced sandwich approach Critical feedback and stroke the ego. You deliver the negative or critical message then add in the positive. 4. Paleo diet: all meat It’s all meat. Extremely direct with no ego stroking. Honest, straight-forward, to the point and overwhelming. 5. Untraditional “wrap” Ask what they think about their performance, then share your views and discuss it. You’re providing critique that is open to debate and discussion.
